Central Virginia mini in April, 2020

Proposed Itinerary:

Day 1: Monday, April 20th - Richmond, Virginia

  • Arrive at your leisure - Free time to explore: the vicinity of the Berkeley Hotel; Shockoe Slip, the historic original port of Richmond on the James River; Canal Walk and Basin; Freedom Museum; or take a Canal Cruise.
  • 4:00 P.M. – Check in time at Berkeley Hotel – If you arrive earlier and your room isn’t ready, you may leave your luggage
  • 5:45 P.M. – Pick up for Reception (This will be a finger-food dinner.)
  • 6:00 P.M. - Reception at Marj’s daughter Janet Peyton’s home on famous Monument Avenue
  • 8:30 P.M. – Pick up to hotel
  • 8:45 P.M.  – Drop off at Berkeley Hotel

Day 2: Tuesday, April 21st - Richmond

  • 7:00 A.M. – 8:30 A.M. – Breakfast in the Berkeley Hotel
  • 8:30 A.M. – Pick up and meet guide in lobby of hotel to begin Tour of Richmond
  • 8:30 A.M. – Morning Tour of Richmond includes:
  • St. John’s Church where Patrick Henry is said to have declared, “Give me liberty, or give me death!”
  • American Civil War Museum
  • 11:30 A.M. – Drop off – Lunch in Shockoe Slip – You will receive a map highlighting possible places for lunch. You will be a very close to the hotel and can grab a quick lunch and go back to the hotel if you wish.
  • 1:00 P.M. – Pick up in Shockoe Slip – Capitol Tour
  • 1:15 P.M. – Drop off at Capitol
  • 1:30 P.M – Capitol and Capitol Grounds tour – The Virginia State Capitol is the first Roman Revival building in the United States, designed by Thomas Jefferson and Charles-Louis Clérisseau, and completed in 1800.
  • 3:00 P.M. – Pick up – Virginia Museum of Fine Arts
  • 3:30 P.M – The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is one of the finest art museums in small cities in the U.S. It is known for its collection of Russian jeweled objects including the largest collection of Fabergé eggs outside Russia but includes several collections of fine paintings, objets d’art, and a beautiful sculpture garden. Marj’s friend Libby Thurston is a docent and will give us a “highlights” tour.
  • 5:00 P.M.-  Pick up VMFA
  • 5:20 P.M. – Drop off at Berkeley Hotel
  • 6:20 P.M. – Pick up for Dinner at Bistro 27.
  • 6:30 P.M – Dinner at Bistro 27
  • 8:30 P.M – Pick up for Berkeley Hotel
  • 8:45 P.M.- Drop off at Berkeley Hotel

Day 3: Wednesday, April 22nd - Richmond; Charlottesville

  • 7:00 A.M. - 8:00 A.M. – Breakfast in the Hotel
  • 8:00 A.M. – Baggage out
  • 8:45 A.M. – Pick-up at the hotel – Richmond tour emphasizing the city’s African-American history
  • - Black History Museum

    - Maggie Walker Home and Museum – Born a slave, Maggie Lena Walker was a businesswoman and civil rights activist whose life exemplifies the successes and frustrations of the African-American community in early 20th century in Richmond.

  • 11:30 A.M. –Drop Off –Lunch and Shopping on own in Carytown, a bustling area of shops and restaurants. You will receive a map highlighting possible places for lunch. If you prefer, the bus can drop you off at the Hotel for a rest, and you can take a short Uber ride to meet the group in Carytown for the 1:30 pickup. You will have to ask the Hotel for a late check-out to keep your room, and you will not have your luggage, which will already be on the bus.
  • 1:30 P.M. – Pick-Up – Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens
  • 2:00 P.M. – Drop off – Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens is gorgeous in April, with examples of the many flowering plants that thrive in the American South.
  • 3:30 P.M. – Pick-up to head to Charlottesville
  • 4:45 P.M. – Meet Vivian Pinn at Pinn Hall
  • 5:30 – Drop-off and Group Check in at OMNI Hotel, Charlottesville
  • 6:00 P.M – Walk to Charlottesville downtown mall, an area that is blocked to vehicle traffic – You will receive a map highlighting possible places for dinner.

Day 4: Thursday, April 23rd - Charlottesville, Virginia

  • This will be a long, tiring day, but there is not a good way to alter the itinerary. We will have an early dinner and be back in our hotel before 9 PM. Wear your comfortable walking shoes. Charlottesville is built on hills.

  • 7:00 A.M. - 8:00 A.M. – Breakfast on own
  • 8:30 A.M. – Pick-up at OMNI Hotel – Court Square Tour – Court Square was the center of life in colonial Charlottesville and has been the site of the courthouse for over 200 years.
  • 8:45 A.M. –Drop Off – Court Square, meet Rick Britton, our historian guide and expert on Thomas Jefferson
  • 8:45 A.M- Court Square History Tour
  • 9:45 A.M. – Pick-Up – UVA Campus & St. Paul’s Episcopal Church
  • 10:00 A.M. – Drop off – UVA Lawn
  • 10:00 A.M. – UVA History Tour ending at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church with a description by Marj’s son, the Reverend Will Peyton, of his experience during the “Unite the Right” demonstration, August, 2017.
  • 12:00 P.M. -Pick-up to Michie Tavern for lunch
  • 12:30 P.M. – Drop-off at Michie Tavern, a historic building that has served many purposes but now again serves its original function as a gathering place, for lunch
  • 1:30 P.M – Pick-up – Michie Tavern to Monticello
  • 1:45 P.M. – Drop off – Monticello, Thomas Jefferson’s fascinating home of his personal design, now curated to give many insights into the lives of landowner families and their servants and slaves
  • 4:30 P.M. – Pick-up for OMNI Hotel
  • 4:50 P.M. – Drop off at OMNI Hotel
  • 6:00 P.M. – Pick-up – Dinner at Travinia – Rick Britton and his wife and Will Peyton and his wife will be our guests.
  • 8:30 PM – Pick-up and drop-off at OMNI Hotel

Day 5: Friday, April 24 - Montpelier, Return to Richmond

  • 7:00 A.M - 8:30 A.M. – Breakfast on own
  • 8:00 A.M. – Baggage out
  • 9:00 A.M. – Pick-up at OMNI Hotel – head to Montpelier
  • 9:45 A.M. –Drop Off – Montpelier, the home of James Madison and present site of an extensive archaeological exploration of the contributions of the enslaved to the growth of our country, and the influence of slavery on contemporary institutions
  • 10:00 A.M. – Montpelier Tour
  • 11:45 A.M. – Box Lunch at Montpelier
  • 12:30 P.M. – Pick-up to head back to Richmond
  • 2:00 P.M. – Drop – off at Berkeley and then Richmond International Airport
