Our classmate Kathy Broome Williams, a lauded naval historian, gave us a moving talk about a subject close to her heart. In Forging a Plowshare into a Sword: The career of Maj. Roger Broome, USMCR, Kathy discussed the career in the Marine Corps of the father she never knew. Her discussion was based on her research into his experiences that went into her book The Measure of a Man, my Father, the Marine Corps and Saipan, Naval Institute Press, 2013.
The full set of Kathy's activities and awards goes on for 8 pages starting with her graduation from Wellesley College in 1966, Phi Beta Kappa. She received her M.A. in history from Columbia University in 1969 and the Ph.D. from NYU in 1993. Before and after that she has taught at universities and colleges all over the country. Many others have noted her achievements, too. In addition to her five published books of Naval History, she has published many articles and reviews, she received the Knox Medal for Lifetime Achievement in Naval History, the National Maritime Historical Society Houghton award for best feature article and, in 2005 the History of Science Society’s Women in Science Award her book, Improbable Warriors: Women Scientists and the US Navy in World War II.
