Ann and David Wilkins traced their five-year journey as curators of the “Sisters in Liberty: from Florence, Italy, to New York” exhibition currently at the Ellis Island National Museum of Immigration. The origin of the exhibition was the “Liberty of Poetry” in the Florentine church of Santa Croce, which was dedicated three years before the colossal Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor. While the initial inspiration was the question of priority — which came first? — the ideas expanded, the collaboration broadened, and the exhibition that became reality last October 2019 ultimately focused on the question “What does Liberty mean to you?”
