Barbara J. Steuert, an active member of the Glen Rock community, died peacefully surrounded by family at her home on Tuesday, March 8th after a courageous battle with breast cancer. She was 75.
Born in Reading, Pennsylvania, Barbara lived in Cambridge, MA before moving to Glen Rock, NJ 51 years ago. Barbara was a graduate of Wellesley College, MA and Fairleigh Dickinson University, NJ, where she earned her MBA degree.
Barbara served as an elected member of the Glen Rock Board of Education for 28 years and was an active member of the Glen Rock Democratic Committee and The League of Women Voters. She served as Chief Operating Officer for H&E Telephone Federal Credit Union in Rochelle Park, NJ for over 36 years.
Barbara cherished family vacations on Long Beach Island, celebrating holidays, especially Christmases, and New Year's Eves at Aldo's Restaurant. She was loving, intelligent, passionate, and beautiful, inside and out. She leaves a legacy of service to her community, her four granddaughters, numerous nieces, and nephews who will continue in her footsteps. She lived her life by the words of Margaret Mead, "Never underestimate the power of a small group of committed people to change the world. In fact, it is the only thing that ever has."
Barbara is survived by her husband of 28 years, Joseph J. Kiernan; her daughter Elizabeth Steuert Riva and her husband Sebastiano Riva and their daughters Grace and Emily; her son Douglas Robert Steuert; her stepdaughter Jennifer Kiernan-Gomez and her husband Joel Gomez and their daughters Brooklyn and Riley; her cousins, Vince Gambal and Greg Gambal; and dearest friend, Dian Schons.
