VIRTUALLY VERDANT: At Home Labyrinth with Laura Becker-Lewke

At Home Labyrinth, was presented by classmate Laura Becker-Lewke in late June. It was our third Virtually Verdant session this year. That evening, sixteen classmates joined us from across the US and as far away as Manila in the Philippines to learn about the history of this age-old mindfulness tool for reflection, inner peace, and stress relief.

Laura began by sharing some of her passion for labyrinths and how she got interested in them. She explained that her interest was initially piqued by the fact that it was a form of meditation where she didn't have to sit still! Laura has been a passionate student of this practice ever since.

We had the opportunity to experience some of the power of the labyrinth for ourselves as Laura led us through a finger-practice based on the labyrinth pattern uncovered at Chartres Cathedral in France. The paper labyrinth we used can be downloaded here.

WC-LBLLabyrinthwithstudents.jpgLaura and her husband Reynold have gifted several labyrinths to Wellesley, including the newest installation of a biodegradable labyrinth to be dedicated once we can return to our lovely campus.  Largely as a result of these donations, the College has incorporated labyrinths into thestudent wellness initiative, as well as into various spiritual and religious activities on campus.

If you have suggestions for Virtually Verdant sessions you or perhaps you and another classmate would like to host, please contact class Vice President Susan (Jacobsen) Stone. She and your team of 1977 officers would love to make it happen!
