Cinco de Mayo—or the fifth of May—commemorates the Mexican army’s 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (1861-1867). A relatively minor holiday in Mexico, in the United States Cinco de Mayo has evolved into a celebration of Mexican culture and heritage. Our Cinco de Mayo 2017—Ivy Style—celebrates one cultural aspect in particular: libations.

It can be argued that tequila is the best-known spirit originating from Mexico. It is the bedrock to any rollicking margarita. Even still, many are unfamiliar with tequila origins, are unaware of its many types, and unschooled in tequila’s ties to heritage and culture. That’s about to change.

In preparation for Cinco de Mayo 2017, HBS Club Columbus, and the Harvard and Dartmouth Clubs of Central Ohio invites all members and guests to Tequila 101: Mastery and Mixology (a course even Don Julio himself would be proud of). We begin with a discussion about tequila, it’s history and its indelible mark on Mexican culture. Alumni are then guided through a tequila tasting—sampling many of the different tequila types. The information gleaned will then be put to the test as alumni try their hands at making the perfect margarita. It is at this point that we thought it wise to roll in a few Mexican inspired appetizers, perfectly paired with… you guessed it, tequila!
