The Enduring Legacy of Frederick Law Olmsted
Arleyn Levee, HON. ASLA, Wellesley Class of 1962, is a landscape historian and preservation consultant specializing in the work of the Olmsted firm, and author of several articles concerning Olmsted design work. Her recent book, The Blue Garden: Recapturing an Iconic Newport Landscape, published this past October, tells the story of a 100-year old garden’s decline and rebirth.
Frederick Law Olmsted was born on Ann Street in Hartford and buried in Hartford’s Old North Cemetery. His landscape design influence extends from Central Park to the U.S. Capitol grounds and beyond. Involved in nearly 300 projects in Connecticut, including Bushnell Park, the Institute of Living, and Trinity College, Olmsted expertise was also relied on for campus designs at Wellesley, Smith and Mount Holyoke Colleges.
