Club President’s Message – December 2020
Dear Wellesley alums,
I hope you’re all well and managing to cope with life under whichever COVID-19 Tier you’re in right now. Although it’s frustrating that we can’t gather in person for our Club events, our many Zoom calls have brought an unexpected bonus: alums from across the UK can attend. It’s been great to see and meet so many of you who might otherwise have found it difficult to join an event in London, Oxford, or Edinburgh.
We’ve had some great events in the past couple of months: two Drop-in Drinks sessions; a “Careers in the time of COVID” panel, featuring Carrie Coombs '81 and Kate (Wojciechowski) Grussing '86 (page 9); the launch of our new Weekend Book Club; and of course a sightly different Thanksgiving gathering (page 10).
We have two more Zooms before we close out 2020:
- our Saturday Book Club, on December 12th: we'll be reading Dune Song by Wellesley alum Anissa Bouziane '87, and we're very excited to announce that Anissa will join us!
- Holiday Drop-in Drinks, on December 16th.
Details for both events and links to Eventbrite are on pages 12 and 13. We hope you’ll join us.
We’re also pleased to announce our first joint event with the Wellesley Club of Paris: The 2020 American Presidential Campaign: A Conversation. The discussion will take place on January 24th and will feature our own Susan Schoenfeld Harrington ’84 (page 13).
This issue’s “Meet Your Sibs” section features two of my classmates: Karen Rock Monnick and Alison Kurke (page 3). We’re looking for more volunteers for these profiles; please email Saya Yada ‘12, our Newsletter Chair, if you’re interested.
More news: the Club Board has undergone another change since I last wrote. Sophiya Chiang ’18, our Communications Officer, has moved back to Hong Kong. We’ll announce her replacement soon. Thank you for all your hard work on the new website and our social media channels, Sophiya!
And finally, the Club is here for you if you need support of any kind: do get in touch if we can help to connect you with others for career advice, job hunts, childcare challenges, general information if you’re new to the UK, etc. I look forward to seeing you on our Drop-in Drinks calls and at our other virtual events! Happy Holidays!!
Yours,
Audrey Mandela ’80
