James Oles, senior lecturer in art, Wellesley College, presents Chichén Itzá Deco: New Readings of the Maya Revival.

Beginning in the mid-1920s, the archaeological excavation and restoration of the Maya city of Chichén Itzá—sponsored by the Carnegie Institution of Washington and widely promoted in the popular press—captured the imagination of artists, architects, designers, and filmmakers, particularly in the United States. This talk explores the cultural and political messages embedded in streamlined references to ancient Chichén, with a focus on Los Angeles landmarks like the Mayan Theater and Siqueiros's Tropical America mural.
