Local engagement is a cornerstone of WAAD, and our Regional Representatives are key to making that happen. We’re looking for alums to step forward in the New England, Northeast, Central, South, and West regions.
Check out our Q & A with Azizah Yasin '94, previously New England Regional Representative and now our new Vice President of Programs.
- How has your role as Regional Representative helped you connect with other WAAD members and the alumnae community? Programming I planned as the New England Regional Representative was a catalyst for gaining intergenerational relationships with WAAD members: I was able to reconnect with alums with whom I spent 4 years on campus as well as to establish new relationships with WAAD members of classes before and after my time on campus. Attending Blueprint as a WAAD delegate was an amazing experience as I established relationships with WCAA staff and alum leadership for SIGs (Shared Identity Group), Clubs and Classes, all of which centered around learning about resources available to us and building connections toward cross-pollination programming.
- What have you liked most about being a Regional rep? I most enjoy any and every opportunity to go back to our beloved Harambee House. Much of the programming I developed simultaneously fulfilled all parts of our WAAD mission - to strengthen the connection of alumnae of African descent to each other, the College, and current as well as prospective students.
- What would you say to a WAAD member who might be considering the position? WAAD offers organization-wide programming; Regional Representatives are largely responsible for planning region-specific programming that provides gathering and fellowship opportunities. We are such a richly diverse SIG and your experiences and viewpoints would enhance WAAD’s outreach to alums of all generations and in all locations. As Vice President of Programs, I coordinate the Regional Representatives and am here for you, so you will not be isolated or alone.
Please consider lending your talents to WAAD. It can be a great way to meet new people and share ideas. If you are interested, please reach out to WAAD President Andrea Donnor '00 at firstname.lastname@example.org to learn more about how to get involved.
